German Surgical Society at its annual meeting recently published draft guidelines for medical care dying patients. It is the first time limit and under certain circumstances in the treatment of medical care as an integral part of, and that, for some patients, the treatment is not only a reasonable limit, but also necessary.
The draft requirements of the general public should be formulated. In view of the Netherlands have legalized active euthanasia in Germany on this issue need to indicate their position. Last year, the German Federal Court to one case of coma patients discontinued treatment for a legitimate act (because there is sufficient evidence that she had no hope of resuscitation).
The guidelines stress that the decision to suspend the treatment can not have economic motives. Reduce health care costs society the right decision, not just a doctor thing. Limited treatment decisions should be the main follow the wishes of the patient. Family members can make recommendations, but one can have arbitrarily decided. According to the criteria in critically ill patients take the initiative to support the practice of euthanasia or suicide is still regarded as immoral behavior.
At present, the German medical community is on the revision of these guidelines. German Federal Medical Board is expected to introduce similar guidelines later this year.
